Pre-show talk at 12:40pm by Jacob's Pillow                   Scholar-in-residence Brian Schaefer, a co-presentation with Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival.

Music: Ilya Demutsky Choreography: Yuri Possokhov Libretto: Kirill Serebrennikov Cast: The Bolshoi Principals, Soloists and Corps de Ballet

Pechorin, a young officer, embarks on a journey across the majestic mountains of the Caucasus, on a path set by his passionate encounters. Disillusioned and careless, he inflicts pain upon himself and the women around him…

“Give me everything, it is still not enough.” The story based on the larger-than-life hero Pechorin is adapted from Mikhail Lermontov’s literary masterpiece in three separate stories recounting his heartbreaking betrayals. Is Pechorin a real hero? Or is he a man like any other? This brand new production by choreographer Yuri Possokhov is a tragic poetic journey that can only be seen at the Bolshoi.

Brian Schaefer is a New York-based writer and journalist, and a proud product of Southern California. He contributes regularly to dance coverage at the New York Times, Out Magazine and Dance Magazine and covers a variety of non-dance topics for Israel’s Haaretz newspaper. He is the recipient of an NEA fellowship for dance criticism at the American Dance Festival, served on the board of the Dance Critics Association from 2011-2014, and was a finalist for the 2013 Livingston Award for Young Journalists in International Reporting.
