Who We Are - Who We're Becoming: The Changing Face of Berkshire Taconic Communities
Sunday, October 21 4-6pm
Invitation to all Public interested in participating
Immigration, second-home owners, baby boomers growing older: we can see that our region's demographics are changing. At the same time, our shifting economic base is creating new kinds of jobs for employees with new skill sets. If our communities are to remain strong and vibrant in the years ahead, it's important that we understand who we are and who we're becoming. To mark its 20th anniversary, Berkshire Taconic is sponsoring a public conversation about our changing demographics and the challenges and opportunities they offer.

What will our cities and towns look like 20 years from now? Who will be living here and what jobs will they have? And what can we learn from other communities that have faced similar changes and challenges? The public is invited to join us as we explore these important issues with our national expert and local respondents. Our keynote speaker is Kenneth Johnson, professor of sociology at the University of New Hampshire and author of the study ?Demographic Trends in Small Town and Rural America.?

Our local respondents are: Brooke Mead, co-director, Berkshire Immigrant Center; David Grossman, financial policy analyst;Peter Paden, executive director, Columbia Land Conservancy; and Richard Vinette, executive director, Lee Community Development Corp.

The symosium will be held on Sunday, October 21, 2007, from 4-6 p.m. Berkshire Taconic invites the public to join us after the program for a reception marking our 20th year of service in the community. To make a reservation, please contact Pat Salvi at 800.969.2823 or pat@berkshiretaconic.org. www.berkshiretaconic.org/

Sunday, September 30, 1:00 pm Matinee
$20.00 - Now Sold Out!
About Dan Zanes and Friends "It was one of those rare children's concerts where the grownups clearly had as much fun as their toddlers." - The Boston Herald "Dan Zanes is enriching the field with his dance-party, hootenanny for the 21st century-style live performances...combining uncompromising vocal and instrumental artistry and a muscular pop beat with an all-embracing, down-style that harks back to the days when sing-alongs in the parlor brought families and friends together." -Los Angeles Times "His albums are hip enough for Debbie Harry and Lou Reed to make cameos but accessible enough for the under-ten set to sing along...this is good 'ol fashioned pop music for all ages." - Esquire "The band's frequent live shows create the happiest concert vibe since Woodstock. With a lot less drugs and mud." - New York Magazine "Zanes has released...rootsy, whimsical albums brimming with warmth and musical integrity." - Boston Globe "What makes Dan Zanes and Friends such a treasure is that they exist outside the corporate structure. There's no attempt to cross-promote or create a consumer. All that matters is having fun." - VARIETY "Zanes' performance is refreshing in its uncommercialized sweetness...homey and handmade, the hour-long show has only one agenda: entertaining children." -Variety "The former lead singer of the Del Fuegos has charged to the rescue of beleaguered parents everywhere with his two recordings of classic children's songs and inventive originals. Making music that entertains children without sounding too corny or precious is no easy chore. Thank goodness someone is taking on the task." -The Washington Post "His concerts are as much dance party as sing-along..." -The Los Angeles Times "...[This] rock veteran reinvents children's music, and parents everywhere are thankful." -Nashville Scene

Asleep At The Wheel - Nine Time Grammy Winning Texas Swing!
Mahaiwe Presents Events
Sunday, November 11, 7:00 pm
$25/$35 Reserved Seating
Over the course of the last 36 years Benson and the Wheel have boldly defied the fickle lures of the mainstream -- and thrived -- by sticking to their noble cause of keeping that distinctly American of art forms, western swing, alive and kicking. Along the way, they've entertained thousands and won praise and admiration from everyone from Willie Nelson to Bob Dylan, George Strait to Van Morrison. After three plus decades in the music industry and nine Grammy Awards, Asleep at the Wheel began playing their dance music with pops orchestras to an overwhelming response in Fort Worth, Dallas and Austin. Asleep at the Wheel is not just your typical dance band, they're an institution: an ever-shifting lineup (over 80 members to date) of like-minded musicians united under Benson's crusade to carry the torch of big band Western Swing music into the 21st Century. If you want to hear what Texas sounds like, all you need to do is pop in an Asleep at the Wheel CD. www.asleepatthewheel.com

Preservation Hall Jazz Band
Sunday, December 9, 7:00 pm
$35/ $40 Reserved Seating
The Mahaiwe is proud to continue its tradition of holding a yearly tribute to New Orleans. Named for the historic Preservation Hall in New Orleans, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band has been referred to by one critic as, "a bridge across the ages - a link between the present day and the heyday of traditional New Orleans music." The group, which has been touring for more than 25 years and currently, consists of musicians who range in age from 31-88 works to preserve the New Orleans Jazz style. Collectively, these musicians represent the industry's elite; a finely tuned band whose members hail from highly regarded musical families. Together, they keep alive the traditions and history of this uniquely American sound. The tempo is a shade slower than the other jazz forms and the melody is always clearly heard with improvisation at its heart. Un-obscured by complicated arrangements, its greatness lies in its simplicity. You'll hear the difference on tunes like "Bucket's Got a Hole in It," "Bill Bailey," "Little Liza Jane," "When the Saints Go Marching In," and many more. Hailed by the San Francisco Examiner as "The best jazz band in the land," the Preservation Hall Jazz Band is known for its high energy, crowd-satisfying performances. www.preservationhall.com

YES! The original and classic horror tribute to Halloween, with live music by The Devil Music Ensemble!

NOSFERATU, like The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari and Metropolis, descended from the same artistic wave of German cinema in the 1920's, is the definition itself of artistic film, where painting, architecture, literature, psychology, and politics meet in a work that gratifies both the eyes and the spirit. Thus the film develops over several dimensions, from its artistic claim of Romantic-Expressionism, the advent of Nazism, to homosexuality, desire, globalization, and a reflection on cinema itself.

Murnau draws from a history that links Vampires to unexplained deaths. The term, Nosferatu, is of modern origin and derives from the Slavic "nosufur-atu" which is a derivation of the Greek "nosophoros" or "plague carrier."

THE DEVIL MUSIC ENSEMBLE: Formed in Boston in 1999 by guitarist Brendon Wood, Devil Music Ensemble explores all facets of music from rock to electronic, orchestral to folk, and improvisational to incidental. Devil Music Ensemble is a multi-media experience, performing both composed and improvised scores to silent films. While their studio recordings have garnered the accolades of both the Boston Phoenix and the Village Voice, their live scoring of classic and modern silent films has gained them an eclectic following from Boston to Bowling Green. http://www.massdist.com/dme/ Running Time: 94 Minutes
