Special Notice:

It has just come to our attention that the Sunday, January 27, Bolshoi Ballet broadcast of La Bayadere includes offensive content, including dancers in black face, during two scenes.

Rather than cancel this broadcast altogether, which was our initial reaction, we are taking the unusual step of eliminating these scenes from our screening.  This will allow those who attend to consider how contemporary arts organizations should respond to these topics, while we are together within the theater.

Patrons who would like to change their ticket order, for refunds or exchanges, can visit or contact the Box Office through the day of the show: 413.528.0100 (Noon to 4pm).

As a performing arts center that presents both new and classic works, we are familiar with arguments about historical authenticity, changing cultural norms, and the provocative nature of art.
While many performances, films, and broadcasts contain content that offends or disturbs any one viewer, we feel that in 2019, this particular instance rises to an order of magnitude that cannot be ignored.  In the end, we have decided to use the opportunity for conversation and community engagement.

Thank you for your understanding,

The temple dancer Nikiya and the warrior Solor fall deeply in love, igniting heated passions and murderous intrigues when the Rajah and his daughter Gamzatti discover their forbidden love. La Bayadere is one of the greatest works in classical ballet history – a story of love, death and vengeful judgment, set in India. Dazzling sets and costumes, with one of the most iconic scenes in ballet, the “Kingdom of the Shades,” illuminate the tragic tale of the temple dancer Nikiya’s doomed love for the warrior Solor, and their ultimate redemption. A must-see theatrical event.
